New Chapter Shows How Lightweight Design and Sustainability Reinforce Each Other
A new publication from the Digi4Circular team looks at how lightweight construction and resource efficiency can work together, rather than against each other, in product development.
Written by Iryna Mozgova, Osman Altun, Manuel Ott, and Katharina Rohde (Data Management in Mechanical Engineering, Paderborn University), the chapter “Ressourceneffiziente Produktentwicklung: Synergien von Leichtbau und Nachhaltigkeit in Optimierungsprozessen” (“Resource-Efficient Product Development: Synergies of Lightweight Construction and Sustainability in Optimization Processes”) appears in Nachhaltigkeit in der Produktentwicklung (Sustainability in Product Development), published by Springer. Unlike most Digi4Circular publications, which typically appear in English, this chapter was written and published in German.
Using examples such as a motorcycle triple clamp and Digi4Circular’s own data-driven development approach, the authors show how multi-objective optimization can balance technical, ecological, and economic goals across a product’s life cycle, and propose a practical framework for putting this into action. The chapter marks another step in translating the project’s research into peer-reviewed, citable output, reinforcing Digi4Circular’s role in advancing circular economy solutions for the automotive sector.
